The BATSE Burst Team has a policy of making gamma-ray burst data available to the scientific community as soon as possible. Several of the GRB catalog tables are released to the public as they are generated and before publication as an official catalog. These data should be considered preliminary, and the BATSE Science Team reserves the right to update these tables at any time before publication in the official catalog.
Triggers 105 through 5586, which are gamma-ray bursts up to 29 August, 1996, are published as the BATSE 4B Catalog. This catalog contains 1637 gamma-ray bursts.
In analyzing these data, it is important to note that the trigger criteria, including the energy range, have been changed quite often since the end of the 3B catalog. Information about trigger criteria during the BATSE lifetime is contained in the Trigger Criteria Table.
The BATSE trigger numbers correlate all the tables of the catalog. The trigger number is a running sequence of BATSE triggers that include cosmic bursts, solar flares and other events. The sequence begins with trigger 105. The Basic Information Table contains all of the gamma-ray burst triggers, while the remaining tables contain subsets of these triggers.
Table Name | Description |
---|---|
Basic |
The BATSE trigger number, burst name, time of trigger, derived source direction, angle from geocenter to burst direction, information about burst overwrites for each burst. Further explanation and file format details are available here.

Flux and Fluence |
Includes BATSE trigger number, peak flux on the 64 ms, 256 ms, and 1.024 s trigger timescales, and fluences in four energy channels for each burst. Further explanation and file format details are available here.

CMAX/CMIN |
The table gives the BATSE trigger number, cmax/cmin and cmin values for the 64 ms, 256 ms and 1.024 s trigger timescales for each burst. Further explanation and file format details are available here. Last updated: August 1, 2003 |
Duration |
The table gives the BATSE trigger number, and the durations required for integration of 50% and 90% of the burst fluence for each burst. Further explanation and file format details are available here.

Comments | Includes BATSE trigger number and free form comments for each burst. These tables are not updated regularly. |
Exposure | The sky exposure as a function of declination is given for the 4B Catalog and several subsets. These tables are not updated regularly. |
Trigger Efficiency | Describes the fraction of time a burst will be triggered on each of the trigger timescales as a function of GRB intensity. These tables are not updated regularly. |
Trigger Criteria | Trigger threshold and energy range vs. time. These tables are not updated regularly. |
