The European Research Training
Network (RTN) on "GRBs: An Enigma and
a Tool" is organizing a summer
school entitled
"GAMMA-RAY BURSTS: THE
FIRST THREE HOURS"
on the island of Thera
(Santorini). The school will feature tutorial
lectures on gamma-ray burst
(GRB) physics during the mornings
(introductory and advanced
topics), and contributed observational and
theory papers in the
afternoons. The meeting will focus on new
lessons from the Swift era, in
particular on the early phases of GRBs
and on statistical comparisons
between Swift GRBs and earlier samples
from the BATSE, BeppoSAX and
HETE-II satellites. The school is one of
the RTN open meetings and aims
at the exchange of information between
the RTN members and the wider
GRB community. In that spirit we
strongly encourage
participation both from outside and inside the RTN
membership.
A preliminary list of subjects
for the tutorial sessions covers:
Central Engine Physics (core
collapse and Poynting flux models)
Afterglow physics (fireballs
and jets)
Host environments and
properties
Multi-wavelength spectral
properties of GRBs
Supernovae and GRBs
We plan to post a program for
the morning (tutorial) sessions by
middle June to the wider
distribution list and a final program with
all contributions by the end
of June, to the confirmed participants.
The school venue will be the
M. Nomikos center in Fira; the center
capacity is a comfortable 100
participants with a possible extension
to a maximum of 120, depending
on the demand. We, therefore, would
like to kindly request all
interested to complete and send the
attached notice of interest to
the indicated email address as soon as
possible. The registration fee
is 295 euros (equivalent to ~ $ 372,
based on the currency exchange
on May 24, 2005); the fee covers
Conference Center expenses,
coffee breaks, the conference dinner and
welcoming reception, as well
as administration fees for the Local
Organizing Committee. A web
page with hotel and transportation
information and registration
and hotel reservation forms will be made
available by the end of May.
